Richard's Civil War papers show him to have been a private in Co. E of the 18th Regiment of the Texas
Cavalry. He enlisted 13 August 1862 at Dallas, Texas. According to some papers and at Camp Nelson, Arkansas according to others. He was captured at the Arkansas Post 11 January 1863 and was listed on the roll of prisoners who were paroled at Camp Douglas, Illinois in April of 1863 and delivered to City Point, Virginia. His war records do not reflect it, but according to a family record he was killed 22 July 1865 when a soldier went berserk and shot "Dick and four other men in the barracks before killing himself.
