Present or accounted for until wounded in the lung and right shoulder and captured at Gravel Hill, Virginia, 28 Jul 1864. Hospitalized at various Federal hospitals until confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington DC, 24 Sep 1864. Transferred to Elmira, NY 24 Oct 1864. Died 2 Dec 1864 at Elmira of pneumonia. Buried in the CSA POW Cemetery.

Absent, "In hospital sick" on March & April 1863 Roll; admitted 3/16/1863 with pneumonia into General Hospital #9, Richmond; transferred to Chimborazo Hospital #3; transferred 4/27/1863 to C.S.A. General Hospital, Danville, VA.
Present on July & August 1863 Roll.
Wounded by gunshot (Minie') in lung and right shoulder on 7/28/1864 at Deep Bottom/Malvern Hill, VA.; POW; treated 7/29/1864 in U.S.A. 2nd Division of Depot Field Hospital, City Point, VA.; transferred 8/9/1864 to Mansion House Hospital, Alexandria, VA., via "Connecticut" hospital ship; transferred 9/24/1864 to nearby 1st Division General Hospital; confined 9/24/1864 Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C.; transferred 10/24/1864 to Elmira, N.Y.; died there of pneumonia.
The 18th North Carolina Infantry Regiment, formerly the 8th Volunteers, was organized at Camp Wyatt, near Carolina Beach, North Carolina, in July, 1861. Its members were from Wilmington and the counties of Robeson, New Hanover, Bladen, Columbus, and Richmond.
