Selauro "Sele" R. Benavidez
1917-2004
Selauro "Sele" R. Benavidez, 86, was called to rest on Thursday, April 22, after a lengthy illness. He was a lifelong resident of Bosque.
He was raised by his grandparents, Ambrosio and Lena Cordova Benavidez. In 1942, at the age of 24, he was inducted into the U.S. Army, Company A, 405th Infantry. He did combat in the now infamous Battle of the Bulge. He was a awarded the Good Conduct Medal and The American Theater, European, Africa and Middle Eastern Victory Ribbons. He was also awarded the Bronze Star for Valor.
In December 1945, Sele returned home and met and married Elfida Silva. After living in Albuquerque for a short time, they moved back to Bosque, where Sele worked construction and for the Belen School System, but his true calling was farming and ranching. Together, Sele and Elfida raised chile, corn and cattle. Sele tended his cattle until the time of his illness.
Sele had many friends and family. We will miss him and his great sense of humor, his family wrote.
He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Rody Gabaldon Benavidez; his brother, Herminio Benavidez of San Jose, Calif.; his sisters, Mela Vargas and Grace Galindo of San Jose, Calif., and Merlinda Benavidez of Albuquerque.
Sele is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Elfida Benavidez; his two sons, Robert Benavidez and his wife, Gretchen, and Carlos Benavidez and his wife, Annette, of Bosque; his two daughters, Lena and her husband, James Hands, of Santa Fe, and Marlene Benavidez of Bosque; two sisters, Martha and her husband, Tony Jaramillo, of San Jose, Calif., and Natividad and her husband, Gus Jimenez, of Freemont, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held at Romero Funeral Home at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, followed by a rosary at 3 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 26. Interment will follow services at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1 p.m.
Pallbearers will be James Hands Jr., Judith Pennington, Karen Bonaguidi, Kristina Benavidez, Julian Hands, Tawnya Benavidez, Celina Benavidez and Matthew Freeman. Honorary pallbearers will be Christina Baca and Salomon Cordova. Romero Funeral Home, 609 N. Main St., Belen.
